Psyc in real life

So much to be grateful for . Alhamdulilah.

and Patience yet again.
SO here is what I like to share today.

Every smallest stroke of virtue or of vice leaves its ever so little scar. The drunken Rip Van Winkle, in Jefferson's play, excuses himself for every fresh dereliction by saying, "I won't count it this time!" Well! he may not count it, and a kind Heaven may not count it; but it is being counted nonetheless. Down among his nerve-cells and fibers the molecules are counting it, registering and storing it up to be used against him when the next temptation comes. ( William James, the founder of functionalism in Psychology. qtd in Cog. Psyc)

The above excerpt was from his textbook The Principles of Psychology (1890/1903) regarding habits. "He saw it as a mechanism basics to keeping our behavior within bounds. He saw it as being inevitable and powerful..."

I absolutely liked it, of course naturally, but also because that is what we're all trying to do as we unfold another day towards our present. It is through actions that we tend to accomplish our tasks. But never through words or wishful thinking. For one who thinks he can execute his task without the action or work, it is that he is in illusion. Same way, it is by establishing small, consistent and productive patterns that we can manage to be steadfast. In other words, it is what we also call "the end with the means" = you work hard, you get where you deserve to be, however long. And what more is so pleasing to hear it from the most Beloved, may Allah bless him:
"The most beloved deeds to Allah (subhanehu Wa Ta'ala) are those that are consistent" (Al-Bukari)

Thus take the challenge, and whatever it is that you want to do and be, start from the basics...and have faith.
At last here is a food for the soul... a supplication (translation) that we can always read before going to bed at night. With reflection, it is, as all of the Dua`a's, beautiful:

" Oh Allah, I surrender my soul to you; I put forth my deeds to you. I depend on you (for support) before Your Majesty; out of fear, out of awe of Your Majesty and out of yearning to be close to You. There is no refuge and there is no abode except in You. I believe in the Book that You have sent, and the Messenger You have sent." Amen

A Rose

Deep down the ocean of thoughts
under the flowing hot water
exhilarated and rejuvenated
a cornice filled with steam.
A Rose for a Rose
in all colors of life.

A.D

"Pluralites non est pondera sine necessitate"
=
"Entities must not be multiplied without necessity."

Imagine yourself seated in a relatively large room, around the back and especially right opposite the instructor, with about a handful of kids scattered here and there. Now imagine the words coming out of the prof. going thru one ear and out the other, having no impact on you except when you hear something like assignment/quiz, where you buzz yourself out of where ever you drifted. Wait I'm not done yet! NOW imagine your eyes closing and you slumping in the chair...fading memory/attention! *Buzz word* you manage to open your eyes and stay awake to avoid any more embarrassments, the instructor staring right at you (or pretending he never saw you).

That was when I hid myself in the text book and found the above piece (a maxim known as Ockham's razor) a beautiful piece on Ockham, a scholastic philosopher who lived about 1300 to 1349. In the simplest sense, it means that when constructing an argument, you should never go beyond the simplest argument unless it is necessary.

Next time around, I'll try raisins to stay awake. Apparently gums don't work for me (i sleep w/ the gums in my mouth) better yet, I'll do my assignments instead and be more productive.
Seriously though I pay attention for about 10 minutes and zone-out for the remaining 15 and the cycle goes on and on...

Yet still fascinated by genetics...(more on that coming)

Muharram

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficinet, the Most Merciful

Oh Allah, you’re the eternal Lord and this is the New Year. So I ask you to give me in this year a protection from Satan, strength to combat this lower commanding self (which commands me towards evil) and allow me to be occupied in those things which take me closer to you.

(This is a translation of the supplication Our Beloved Muhammed made during the beginning of the year, Muharram)

Upon us is the New Year, 1429, according to the Hijra. It is a point at which we can resolve to push things to the next level, be it worldly or spiritual. It is a point at which one evaluates himself/herself to be more productive and (should) take the relevant steps that work best.

It is my hope that Allah guide us towards the straight path, and that we prosper in becoming better Human beings in every sense insha'allah.

It is also recommended that one observe fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. We're to narrate on the authority of Ibn Abbas (Radi Allahu Anhuma) that the Messenger of Allah (Salla Allahu Aleyhi Wa Salam) said, "If I remain alive till the next year, I shall also observe fast on the ninth of Muharram." [Muslim] Also in another narration Ibn Abbas notes that the Messenger of Allah observed fasting on the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) and commanded them to fast as well.

May the coming year be filled with reflections that shall guide us towards liberation, Insha'Allah.

tears

One doesn’t always cry because he/she is sad. The same is true for laughter. Tears are sacred. They are the soft and yet enigmatic part of an individual’s psyche. Crying releases a stagnant energy within one. It is a channel, a connection between the unattainable brain and the outside. Since we can’t always say everything in words—not because we don’t want to, but because they’re beyond words—we cry. But it isn’t always sadness that makes one shed some tears. We all cry, no matter what the cause, because we know a reality others don’t. We cry because we know we’re human beings with limited powers.

Clouds of truth cover one’s heart like a blanket till it starts to swell with sacred tears. It looks up towards the heavens as the doors to our heart open and everything about a person spills over, sometimes a bead of tear rolls from the blessed gates and other times tears until eternity…
